This past weekend, I attended the first of my college friends to get married’s wedding…and it was really weird…but also really fun. As in “same time and place next weekend?!” fun. I got to see two old friends celebrate their unlikely (they met on a blind date when he was set up to go with her to our formal…and he didn’t even want to go!) but heartmeltingly cute love while partying it up with college friends that I see all too infrequently. What more could I ask for?!
Knowing Stephanie and Stephen, I knew that 2 things would be certain about their wedding: 1) it would be next-level beautiful (that dress!!), and 2) it would be quite the party. And boy, did it not disappoint on either front! Only these two would have spicy margaritas passed out before the ceremony!
The festivities started the day before with, what else, and afterparty to their rehearsal dinner! Upon arrival, guests were escorted to elevators where we soared up to a gorgeous terrace high above downtown Raleigh. Once inside, we were able to munch on baked brie and shrimp cocktail, sip cocktails (stirred up by his old fraternity bartender), and listen to a great jazz band…all while we were fixated on watching the Tar Heels play in the tournament (So fixated I all but forgot to take pictures)! I know Stephanie and Stephen would have had it no other way.
These two are serious Tar Heel fans. Stephanie was on the dance team, so I’m pretty sure she has been to every single basketball and football game since our Freshman year. I mean, just look at the groom’s cake!
The next day I woke up a little groggy from the previous night’s festivities, but so excited to see what they had in store for the wedding that I pushed right past it. My friends Katie and Emily, who you have heard me talk about before here, and I decided to book a hotel room even though the wedding was right here in Raleigh. That way it would be easier to get to the location and we could have a hotel primping party before heading over! One thing I miss most about college is getting ready for a big night, it was so fun to relive that! Our best friend Maggie stayed in the same hotel with her boyfriend, JR. She joined in on the getting ready fun while JR napped, and then he popped over just in time for wine before we headed out.
Their wedding was at The Umstead Hotel and Spa.
As soon as we arrived, we were ushered to our seats with Spicy Margaritas in hand. Once seated, we settled down for what turned out to be the cutest ceremony of all time.
Their first kiss stole the show. I’m pretty sure even the people watching from their balconies (which is apparently a thing there) melted on the spot. I hope men in the audience took note…tear up as your bride walks down the aisle and get carried away in the first kiss and you will steal the show!
Afterwards, we all headed inside where we mingled with friends old and new, sipped on their signature cocktail, ginger margaritas, and were tempted by plates of delicious appetizers.
For dinner, we nibbled on a buffet of shrimp, oysters, mexican food, southern bbq with all the fixings, and ice cream sundaes. Yes, you read that right. Literally every best food was available. And just when you thought the night was winding down, waiters popped up around the room with platters of late-night treats: fries, chicken biscuits, and sliders.
I haven’t attended many weddings, but I was really impressed by this one. Even more than the show, however, I enjoyed the chance to celebrate this happy occasion with so many of my best friends. I’ve never seen Stephanie or Stephen so happy, and I am so happy I got to share this day with them. I had a great time and it has me hoping another friend decides to take the plunge soon! Here’s one last picture of them, just for good measure!
